Made in France: Authentic Paris Souvenirs
It is the trend that has grown the most in our shop over the past five years. More and more customers — French and international alike — specifically ask for souvenirs that are genuinely made in France. Not just designed in Paris or inspired by France: actually manufactured on French soil.
At Souvenirs & Co, we understand this expectation. Since 1989, we have worked with French suppliers and we know the difference between an authentic product and a misleading label. This guide presents our selection of Made in France Paris souvenirs, with real prices and our tips for spotting the genuine article.
Why Made in France makes a difference
A Paris souvenir imported from overseas and one manufactured in France do not tell the same story. Made in France is first and foremost about quality: materials are more carefully selected, finishes are better, and the product ages well. It is also a meaningful gesture: every purchase directly supports French artisans and workshops.
And let us be honest: when you give someone a Paris souvenir and can say “it was made in France,” the gift carries extra weight. The recipient notices.
Our Made in France selection
The French beret
Crafted in south-west France for centuries, the wool beret is probably the most iconic Made in France souvenir. Authentic models are made from merino wool, felted using skills passed down through generations in the Pyrénées.
Expect to pay €15 to €25 for a real beret. It is genuinely wearable — not an object that ends up in a drawer. Our American and Asian customers are particularly keen: for them, it is the quintessential French accessory.
How to tell a real beret from a synthetic copy? Touch. Merino wool is soft and warm; synthetic is smooth and slightly scratchy. And price: a beret at €5 is not made in France.
Scented soaps
Lavender, rose, orange blossom, donkey milk: French soaps make a gift that pleases almost everyone. Traditional Marseille soap is made from a centuries-old recipe using vegetable oils, cooked in a cauldron for several days.
€5 to €12 depending on size and scent. It is the perfect hostess gift: attractive, useful, light and easy to pack. Our tip: soaps wrapped in kraft paper with a ribbon look far better than those in plastic blister packs.
Biscuits and sweets
Breton butter biscuits, sables, Provençal navettes, nougat: France has a rich baking tradition, and these specialities travel well. Presented in decorative metal tins with Paris designs, they make visually appealing gourmet gifts.
€8 to €18. The bonus with metal tins: once the biscuits are gone, the tin stays as a decorative or storage piece. Make sure the contents are genuinely made in France — the tin alone does not count.
Printed tea towels and textiles
Cotton or linen tea towels printed with French recipes, a Paris map or landmark illustrations are woven in France by specialist workshops. Both decorative and functional, they cost €8 to €15.
Flat as a sheet of paper, they slip into a suitcase without taking up any space. A clever gift that our customers often buy alongside another souvenir.
How to spot genuine Made in France
It is the question we get asked most often in our shop. Here are our criteria after 37 years in the business:
- “Fabriqué en France” on the label: this is the most reliable indicator. Look for it on the product or its packaging.
- The “Origine France Garantie” label: it certifies that the product is primarily manufactured on French territory.
- A named place of manufacture: French artisans are typically proud to state their region or workshop. A beret marked “made in Oloron-Sainte-Marie” is a trust signal.
- Price as an indicator: a Made in France product costs more than an imported equivalent. A beret at €3 or a “Marseille soap” at €1 is almost certainly not made in France.
Wording to watch out for: “French design,” “inspired by France,” “French spirit” mean nothing in terms of where the product was actually made. A product “designed in Paris” can be manufactured anywhere.
Made in France and classic souvenirs: our honest take
Let us be clear: not every souvenir in our shop is Made in France. Our miniature Eiffel Towers, magnets, keychains, mugs, jewellery, snow globes, plush toys and t-shirts remain quality souvenirs loved by our customers, regardless of where they are manufactured.
What matters is knowing what you are buying. If Made in France is important to you or the person you are gifting, our dedicated Made in France category groups only products whose manufacturing origin has been verified. For the rest of our catalogue, we select on quality and durability, regardless of the country of manufacture.
